Hey, I’m Tyler! A lifelong explorer and thrill-seeker, travel has been a central part of my life for as long as I can remember. Now as a college student at the University of Maryland, I’ve begun planning my own trips to extend my travel resume.
Growing up, I realized how much travel can change your perspective and the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone. Now, I want to encourage others to do the same and embrace new experiences.
A Little Bit about Tyler
Like the rest of my family, I’m very active, outdoorsy, and always seeking adventure. I’m not sure how much of this comes from my blood, and what stems from our around the world trip in 2014. As a child, I’ll admit I was reluctant to leave my comfortable life behind for a year full of unknowns. Yet this monumental trip was such an eye-opening experience that totally shifted my view on life. Now I’ll jump at any chance to travel to new places or try new things, no matter how scary at first.
I enjoy pushing the limits of my comfort zone through new thrill-seeking activities, such as scuba diving with sharks, cliff jumping in Bali, and skydiving. I’ve loved to hike ever since I was young and have recently gotten hooked on rock climbing and surfing too. I’ve also begun competing as a triathlete in Half-Ironman distance races as another way to push my physical and mental boundaries.
My Role with Earth Trekkers
In 2014 on our around the world trip, I documented our travels through short daily videos. Evolving from a small obsession with videography, this “RTW” video series became my own side project during our year of travel. After the trip, I continued to improve my work and learned new skills along the way, picking up drone photography that I added into my work.
Since I entered college three years ago, I’ve also become more of an active writer with Earth Trekkers. I’m much more involved with planning my own trips, and as a college student, I can inform others on how they can make the most of their trip while on a budget.
Interesting Facts about Tyler
Education
I’m currently a senior at the University of Maryland at College Park studying Aerospace Engineering. I’ve naturally excelled in STEM classes from a young age, and with my Dad having taken the same path through college, this was a logical step for me.
After graduation, I’m planning to pursue a master’s degree in Astrodynamics. My goal for the future is to combine my love for both travel and space, and work on developing new systems that will make space travel more accessible for the everyday person.

Tyler’s Favorite Travel Experiences
Without a doubt, my fondest travel experience was the three months I spent studying abroad in Sydney, Australia. From spending my mornings surfing at beautiful beaches, learning to scuba dive, and plenty of travel in and around Australia, nothing will beat living in such an awesome city and getting to explore every corner of it. Sydney became a second home for me, and I eagerly await the chance to return.
Hiking the Walker’s Haute Route ignited my passion for long-distance treks. With 13 days and 127 miles, all through the stunning French and Swiss Alps, this trek provided the perfect mix of hard work and beauty. The best days were those when we had the trail to ourselves, alone out in the Alps. And nothing will top finishing off a hard climb, sitting down in town and feasting on a massive plate of Rösti and a nice cold beer, all while enjoying the view.
I believe one of the best ways to learn while traveling is by speaking with the locals, primarily in their native language. On our around the world trip, I spent the four weeks we had traveling through China acting as our interpreter. For one year leading up to this, I had been taking online courses learning Mandarin. At just the age of 11, I helped lead our family around an unfamiliar environment and learned so much in the process. Everyone we met in China was very supportive and also appreciative of the efforts I made, and this inspired me to continue studying languages to enhance our own travel experiences.

What Tyler's Up To Right Now
Now I’m 21 years old and a student at the University of Maryland. It’s hard to imagine that my time in college is almost up, and it’s also the time to start thinking about my path onwards. One thing’s for certain: there’s plenty of travel in my future.
In my free time away from school and the website, I’m training for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Taupō, New Zealand. For me this will hopefully be the first of many “destination races”, as well as a big step up in my triathlon career. I’m also working on some exciting new Earth Trekkers projects that we can’t wait to share with you.
